About
I’m Soroush, an M.Sc. student in Computer Science focused on Artificial Intelligence. My main interests are Machine Learning, Deep Learning, NLP, LLMs, and the mathematical ideas behind how intelligent systems learn. I’m interested in both sides of AI: building useful systems in industry and going deeper into AI research in academia.
My path to Computer Science was not direct. I started with a bachelor’s degree in Industrial Engineering, where I was especially interested in product development and solving real-world problems. Over time, especially during the later part of my bachelor’s, I realized that I was more interested in going deep into technical problems than staying within the broader scope of Industrial Engineering. I became particularly interested in Operations Research, which introduced me to Data Science.
As I learned more about Data Science, I found that understanding Machine Learning was an important part of becoming better at it. I started learning programming and Machine Learning, under the mentorship of Mohammadreza Momeni, and that was the point where I became seriously interested in Computer Science and AI.
This interest also became part of my final bachelor’s project, “AI and its Applications in Industrial Engineering”, which I completed under the supervision of Professor Parisa Shahnazari-Shahrezaei. Working on an AI-related project while still studying Industrial Engineering helped me see more clearly that I wanted to move toward Computer Science and AI. The more I learned, the more I wanted to understand what was happening behind the methods I was using. That eventually led me to make the decision to shift my academic path toward Computer Science and continue my studies with a focus on AI.
I think of myself as a T-shaped person. I like having a broad understanding of different areas, but I also want to go deep into the subjects that really interest me. My background in Industrial Engineering is still part of that broader perspective, especially when it comes to thinking about products, systems, and real-world problems. At the same time, my current focus is clearly on Computer Science and AI.
Alongside my studies, I have been working as a Data Engineer at AlaLinks. My main work there has been focused on crawling large amounts of data and turning that raw data into cleaner and more usable data for AI agents. This experience has taught me a lot about working with data at a practical scale and about the gap between raw information and data that can actually be used by AI systems.
Today, I’m working toward two related goals. On the industry side, I want to grow as an ML/AI Engineer and eventually work on building intelligent products and systems. On the academic side, I’m interested in AI research and in understanding the deeper ideas behind Machine Learning and intelligent systems. I don’t see these as separate paths. I want to be able to both build AI systems and understand them deeply.
Outside work and study
Working and studying are important parts of my life, but they are definitely not my whole life.
I enjoy sports and technology, and these are probably the things I spend the most time on outside of work and university.
I enjoy both watching and playing
Football,
MMA,
Boxing,
F1,
Basketball and
Chess.
I’m also very curious about Tech, specially I'm a big fan of Apple, so I often find myself reading
about new developments in the field, even when they have nothing to do with my current work.
I also enjoy listening to music and watching movies.
I think these interests are important because they give me time to step away from technical work and simply enjoy something different.
Questions I think about
I’ve always been curious about questions that are difficult to answer and sometimes even difficult to define.
Some of the questions I find myself thinking about are:
- Why can’t humans teach other creatures how to build a civilization?
- If consciousness comes from certain processes in the brain, could a very complex computer ever really “feel” like we do, or is there always a gap between computer signals and human feelings?
- If I could make a perfect copy of my mind, including every thought and memory, would that copy really be me, or is there something special about the original me that cannot be copied?
- If thought arises from physical processes, could a mind built on completely different physics ever have an inner experience similar to ours?
- If language shapes how we think, might there be parts of reality that we cannot understand until we invent or develop a new way to talk about them?
